Moshe Kasher is being treated for tonsil cancer.
The Pitt actor was diagnosed with the disease three months ago after discovering a bump in his throat while working on The Comeback King with Glen Powell and Judd Apatow, so recently underwent surgery to remove the tumour.
He revealed on Instagram over the weekend: "Two days ago, a Jewish surgery robot at Cedars Sinai yanked my jaw open for five hours and cut it out, and then slit my throat and disected my neck leaving me with a hardcore neck scar which will make people reluctant to street fight me."
Despite the joking tone, Moshe then turned serious as he admitted it had been "the most terrifying and consciousness consuming experience of my life."
He added: "My life has been terror, meditation, tears and medical planning. I'm in pain and in the middle of a very difficult process. It's going to be a long summer."
The 46-year-old comic - who has an eight-year-old daughter with wife Natasha Leggero - is trying to stay positive but ill found out next week if he requires further treatment.
He said: "The good news is the cancer I have has an incredibly high cure rate (in the 95% zone).
"I will find out next week if I need radiation or not but regardless I will be OK and back to being a cool dude ASAP.
"The other bit of good news is that this is the cancer you get from sex.
"It's cool that now you know I've officially had that . (In a warehouse in the 90s! Natasha did not give me this!)
"The bad news is HPV positive tonsil cancer is an epidemic in men under 55. Get checked and vaccinate your damn kids."
He went on to praise his wife and friends for being "so supportive" and thanked director Apatow for his patience.
He said: "I truly cannot believe I managed to work an entire movie while dealing with this, but Judd could not have been a more kind, supporting and nurturing friend all while on the verge of an energy overdose from his terrifying habit...
"Thanks to Natasha and all my friends for being so supportive. I woke up on that operation table so flooded with emotions and gratitude for my life and the gift of consciousness.
"I can't wait to get back to work, but for now--I breathe, I walk, I eat, I survive, I live."
Apatow was among those who commented on the post, urging his friend to turn to his beloved energy drinks to help with his recovery.
He shared a string of heart emojis and quipped: "You couldn't be a kinder, stronger, funnier person. Heal fast and easy. Also- Five Hour Energy Drinks can really help on those tiring days. I'm also a fan of Patron Silver and Mountain Dew. This post has been sponsored."
