Olivia Wilde realised her engagement was over after a birthday party.

The 42-year-old actress was in a relationship with movie star Jason Sudeikis between 2011 and 2020 - but Olivia accepted that their romance was over after returning home from her own birthday party.

The Hollywood star - who got engaged to Jason in 2013 - shared on the Call Her Daddy podcast: "I remember the date because it was my birthday. But it was March 2020, March 10. Jason and I had been having a rough time there for a while. Like, we had a really bumpy, bumpy ride."

Olivia - who has Otis, 12, and Daisy, nine, with Jason - recalled driving home with the actor when she accepted that their relationship was over.

The actress recalled: "I said, 'Did you get me a birthday present?' And he said, 'What would I get you, Olivia? I don't know you.' And he wasn't wrong. We don't know each other anymore.

"It was f****** tough. And it brought us to a place of like, OK this is done. We're going to end this."

Despite this, Olivia found it tough to go through such a public break-up.

The movie star - who subsequently dated pop singer Harry Styles - explained: "I remember, it was Thanksgiving and we were separated and I was with the kids because it was my time to be with the kids.

"Everything was as it should be. Kids were with me. Jason was photographed with his girlfriend on the beach in Costa Rica and the press were like, 'Yay for him, he looks so happy. So wonderful.'"

Olivia previously admitted that she's struggled to cope with the focus on her personal life.

The actress-turned-director explained that it was tough for her to navigate her break-up and then deal with the extra attention that came her way for dating Harry Styles.

She told Variety: "The last two years, my family has gone through this kind of restructuring and a revolution that should be a totally personal experience. And it's not. The most painful element of it has been women shaming me for making a decision that was for my own health and happiness."
