A mistrial was declared Tuesday in Los Angeles regarding the $90 million lawsuit brought by Chris Brown’s former housekeeper, who says she was attacked by a security dog in the driveway of the controversial singer’s home in late 2020.

Judge Huey P. Cotton said one of the 12 tasked with deciding the case engaged in juror misconduct, having “violated [the judge’s] admonitions against searching the internet for information” and “shared it,” Rolling Stone reports.

Maria Avila alleges she required emergency surgery after she was mauled by Hades, a since-euthanized Caucasian Shepherd, while taking out the trash on Dec. 12, 2020, Rolling Stone reports. Per Avila, she now has permanent disfigurement, nerve damage and vision loss.

Grammy winner Brown, 37, finally conceded through a lawyer during Monday’s jury selection that Avila was indeed brutalized by the dog, for which he now accepts partial responsibility, according to the outlet.

The case is not yet closed though, as a new jury will be selected from an already assembled group, with first witness Brown ordered to return to court by Thursday morning, according to the outlet.

Avila testified during a 2023 deposition that Hades “attacked me on my face, my hand, and it pierced its teeth on my foot.” She also alleged that the “Run It” artist “fled the scene” while she was bleeding.

He claims he didn’t see any blood when he confirmed Avila was still alive and “ran and put the dogs away and yelled and told the security guard to come over.” Brown says he only left after he was alerted that paramedics were en route.

Prior to Cotton declaring a mistrial, Brown’s lawyer said the proceedings would also be used to establish whether the “Run It” artist owed anything to Avila’s family — including sister Patricia, who filed a negligence complaint ultimately consolidated with Avila’s filing.

Patricia said she was traumatized after finding Avila “covered in blood while she was screaming and crying for help.”

Despite this being a civil matter, Brown has a long history of legal troubles, including an alleged 2023 attack on a music producer at a London nightclub, in which he’s pleaded not guilty. Brown last year was held and released on $6.75 million bail.

Most infamously, Brown was sentenced to five years’ probation and community service after attacking then-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009.
