Television Q&A: What does future hold for CBS shows 'Elsbeth' and 'Matlock'?
Published in Entertainment News
You have questions. I have some answers.
Q: What is the future of “Matlock” and “Elsbeth”?
A: Both shows have been renewed for the 2026-27 season. “Elsbeth,” the mystery-comedy starring Carrie Preston, will be on Thursday nights. “Matlock,” the legal drama with Kathy Bates, will be back at midseason. “Matlock” creator Jennie Snyder Urman told TVInsider.com that she asked for extra time before launching a new season. Having wrapped up an ongoing story in its two-hour second-season finale, she said the third season will be a reset with a new mystery, and the show needs to “build the architecture” for all that.
Q: Please tell me “High Potential” will be back for another season.
A: It will, but not until 2027. ABC senior vice president Ari Goldman told Deadline.com that delaying its return means that episodes can run with little or no interruptions, which fall series often face around midseason; the network has found previous success with midseason-starting runs of “Will Trent” and “The Rookie.” And strong ratings for “High Potential” show it is “resilient” even with a long absence, Goldman said.
Q: Where can we watch the movie “Lifeguard” from 1976, with Sam Elliott? And more importantly how does it end?
A: I think “Lifeguard” is the first movie where I saw Sam Elliott and became a lifelong fan. For those of you tuning in late, Elliott stars as a lifeguard who, as he is getting older, is having to ask how long he can continue in his profession. Spoiler: in the end he decides to keep going as a lifeguard “as long as they’ll have me.” Reference book “The Movie Guide” calls it “a sensitive, thought-provoking story involving a man forced to look at himself” (although current audiences may find some of it dated).
The movie has been released on DVD and Blu-ray. Digital availability includes Hoopla and, for a fee, Apple TV, Fandango at Home and Prime Video.
Q: Any word on when the Netflix movie sequel “Heartstopper” will drop?
A: “Heartstopper Forever” wraps up the story from three seasons of the “Heartstopper” series when it arrives on Netflix on July 17. Says the network: “Nick and Charlie are inseparable, but with Nick preparing to leave for university and Charlie finding new independence at school, the reality of a long-distance relationship begins to weigh on them. Doubts take hold, and their relationship faces its biggest challenge yet. Meanwhile, their friends are also navigating the ups and downs of love and friendship, confronting the bittersweet challenges of growing up and moving on. Can first loves really last forever?”
Finally, some time back I mentioned that I had become bored with “Survivor” and no longer watched. One reader took issue as follows:
“I know many, many people who still love ‘Survivor.’ It is my favorite show. I’ve seen every episode of every season. I can’t wait to watch it. I’m so excited when it starts and am sad when it ends. It’s about the players. And Jeff. The scenery is still beautiful. It’s still fun. Sorry you don’t enjoy it. There are lots of us who do.”
