'Better Call Saul' actor A. Russell Andrews reveals ALS diagnosis

Actor A. Russell Andrews, known for roles in “Better Call Saul” and “Insecure,” has revealed he’s been diagnosed with ALS.
“I am a person living with ALS,” the actor said Saturday on CNN’s “The Story Is with Elex Michaelson.”
“I was diagnosed in the late fall of last year and … it’s been humbling.”
Symptoms first started showing up during the COVID-19 pandemic. At first Andrews thought he’d had a stroke, he said, or pinched nerves in his neck.
“But then I was not able to do things that I normally do,” Andrews said. “I was dropping cups and glasses, and at night it felt like things were running up and down my arm at different times.”
By his side was fiancée and fellow actor Erica Tazel, who will also be his caregiver. She said she had been “uncharacteristically calm” when Andrews first told her, noting that the diagnosis had answered “a lot of questions that we had.
The 64-year-old stage and screen actor has gone public with his diagnosis during ALS Awareness Month in conjunction with the ALS Network, an advocacy and support group for patients and their caregivers. Andrews, Tazel and his daughter Anya “will share their journey and help connect individuals and families to critical resources,” the network said in a media statement.
ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a motor neuron disease that tends to start with subtle symptoms such as trouble walking, difficulty with daily activities, and weakness in the legs, feet, ankles or hands, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Several public figures have been hit with the disease, most notably including Yankees legend Lou Gehrig, astrophysicist Stephen Hawking and, more recently, “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Euphoria” actor Eric Dane, who died from ALS complications in February at age 53.
