Kara Young to replace Samira Wiley in 'Proof' Broadway revival

NEW YORK — Actor Samira Wiley is pulling out of the Broadway production of “Proof.” She will be replaced by two-time Tony Award-winner Kara Young.
Producers said Tuesday that Wiley withdrew due to a “treatable medical condition that calls for her full attention,” according to a press release.
Young joins a cast that includes “The Bear” star Ayo Edebiri and “Hotel Rwanda” star Don Cheadle, who will make their Broadway debuts when the Tony-winning show previews on March 31. “Proof” opens April 16 at the Booth Theatre.
Though Cheadle has never trod the boards, he is already a Tony winner, as a producer on “A Strange Loop,” which won Best Musical in 2022.
The highly anticipated revival is being directed by “In the Heights” and “Hamilton” director Thomas Kail. Deadline reported last week that former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground production company is co-producing the show.
Wiley’s casting in the role of Clair was announced in November. Producers said Tuesday that Young would assume that role.
Young became the first Black performer to win two consecutive Tony Awards last year. She was recognized for her work in “Victorious” and “Purpose.”
“Proof” is about the turmoil that unfolds when a notebook belonging to a mathematics professor played by Cheadle forces his brilliant daughter, played by Edebiri, to make tough choices.
It won the 2001 Tony for Best Play and the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
A 2005 film based on the story stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Anthony Hopkins, Jake Gyllenhaal and Hope Davis.
