Hulu scraps 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' reboot after pilot filmed

A “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” reboot is not going to happen, former protagonist Sarah Michelle Gellar says.
“So I am really sad to have to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me,” she announced in an Instagram video on Saturday. “Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with “Buffy: New Sunnydale.”
Gellar had been set to appear in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale” sporadically, supporting a new slayer played by 16-year-old Ryan Kiera Armstrong. Gellar was also an executive producer on the series. The pilot was directed by Chloé Zhao, currently of Oscar-nominated “Hamnet” fame as well as the Oscar-winning “Nomadland.”
Zhao and Gellar were reportedly blindsided by the news, given the new series had been in the works since last year, many original cast members were expected to reappear, and the pilot had been filmed. Gellar expressed gratitude for at least getting to relive her memories of the series’ first incarnation, which ran from 1997 to 2003 on WB and then UPN. She played a high school student who had a side hustle decimating demons and other evil entities.
Armstrong also reacted to the news, posting a snapshot of her character, captioned, “Your slayer,” along with a video in an Instagram story.
“I wanted to come on here and say thank you for all of the support that you guys have given me and this show throughout the past couple months. It’s been really special,” she said, according to Entertainment Weekly. “I’m really proud of what we did. I’m sad that you guys won’t be able to see it, but it doesn’t take away from the amazing experience that I had.”
It was longtime fan Zhao who helped convince Gellar to resurrect the series.
“I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy’s stylish yet affordable boots, and thanks to Chloé, I was reminded how much I love her, and how much she means not only to me, but to all of you,” Gellar said in her social media post. “And this doesn’t change any of that.”
She reassured fans she would still be around, reiterating her character’s oft-stated promise that “if the apocalypse actually comes, you could still beep me.”
Hulu did not comment on or publicize the news.
