Rapper Fetty Wap released from prison early after drug conviction

NEW YORK — Rapper Fetty Wap has been released early from prison nearly three years after he was found guilty of conspiracy to distribute cocaine.
The “Trap Queen” singer, whose legal name is Willie Junior Maxwell II, was moved out of the federal prison in Sandstone, Minnesota, on Wednesday and into “community confinement” in Philadelphia, a spokesperson for the U.S. Federal Bureau of Prisons told CNN on Friday.
Maxwell also confirmed his newfound freedom on Thursday in an Instagram story featuring just a single word: “Home,” he wrote.
Maxwell was arrested in New York City back in October 2021 on charges of participating in a conspiracy to smuggle drugs into New Jersey and Long Island. He was one of six defendants accused of operating a “multimillion-dollar bicoastal drug distribution organization,” which relied on the U.S. Postal Service and vehicles with hidden compartments to transport narcotics, according to an indictment obtained by USA Today.
In August 2022, the 34-year-old rapper pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute cocaine and he was sentenced to six years behind bars in addition to five years of post-release supervision in May 2023.
Maxwell is slated to be released from confinement in November, according to reports.
“I want to thank my family, friends, and fans for the love, prayers, and continued support — it truly means everything to me,” the platinum-selling star said in a statement.
“Right now, my focus is on giving back through my community initiatives and foundation, supporting at-risk young children by expanding access to education, early tech skills, and vision care for young kids and students so they can show up as their best selves,” he continued. “I’m committed to moving forward with purpose and making a meaningful impact where it matters most.”
Maxwell continued to release music while behind bars, most recently the single “Forever(71943509),” the title of which referenced his inmate number.
