Burnham rules out UK election if he takes power from Starmer
Published in News & Features
Andy Burnham ruled out calling a U.K. general election if he succeeds Keir Starmer as Britain’s prime minister.
Asked on the social media platform Reddit on Friday whether he would go to polls, the only declared candidate to succeed Starmer in Labour’s leadership election this month said “no.” Burnham said he’d stick to the party’s manifesto promises from the 2024 general election. That includes a commitment to the so-called triple lock on state pensions, he said.
In other comments on Reddit, Burnham said:
—His push for greater public control of services such as water could range “from strong regulation to public ownership”
—He would build on Starmer’s “good work” to forge closer ties with the European Union
—He’s prepared to negotiate return agreements for rejected asylum seekers with countries like Afghanistan
—He believes in electoral reform and would seek to persuade his party of its merits
—He would ensure the U.K.’s defense investment plan is “fully funded”
—He’s 100% committed to maintaining support for Ukraine
If he remains unopposed in the leadership contest when nominations close on July 16, Burnham is poised to become Labour leader the following day and prime minister on July 20. That would be just a month after a triumphant return to the House of Commons after winning a special election in Makerfield, near Manchester, last month.
