Our test vehicle this week brings us back to a brand that has needed a good mid-sized SUV for many years. Maserati’s Levante, a full-size SUV, hit the market with a bang, but the need for a midsize SUV has been a long time coming.

The Grecale is a four-door mid-size SUV boasting mid-size performance, price and options. The base GT, at $65,000, offers a four-cylinder 2.0-liter engine with 296 horsepower. Our Modena tester had an engine with similar features but 325 horsepower.

For those willing to pay a six-figure price, the Grecale Trofeo offers 523 horsepower and a six-cylinder engine, while the Grecale Folgore is all electric.

Our tester's handsome Nero Tempesta exterior color is a metallic black similar to the Jeep Grand Cherokee L, nicely complementing the black glossy inserts and a nice Rosso Red interior.

As is typical with Stellantis fleets, endless options are available, allowing you to spice up and create a vehicle specifically for you. On our tester, we noticed about $19,000 worth of extras, including carbon fiber, 21-inch wheels, driver assist and laminated glass, making it somewhat overpriced but on the whole a nicer ride. Similar to Alfa Romeo, the Grecale is an updated version of Alfa’s Stelvio. In fact, the Grecale sits on the company’s Giorgio’s platform, which includes Jeep’s Grand Cherokee, the Grecale and the Stelvio.

Back in 2019, we reviewed the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio and loved it so much we declared it the Midsize Luxury SUV of the Year. Well, for 2023 the Maserati Grecale is here and it’s our 2023 Midsize Luxury SUV of the Year. We enjoyed the Maserati Grecale Modena so much, with its expansive space, excellent design and interior comfort, it only makes sense for the consumer. Great job, Maserati, keep up the good work.
