PLEASANTON, California — Gap has revealed the details of massive layoffs affecting hundreds of workers in the Bay Area, along with employees in the Central Valley, official state government filings show.
The retailer has decided to chop 700 Bay Area jobs, primarily in San Francisco, but also in Pleasanton, according to WARN letters on file with the state Employment Development Department (EDD).
Gap’s layoffs include 663 workers in San Francisco and another 37 in Pleasanton, the filings with the EDD show.
Along with the layoffs in the Bay Area, Gap is cutting 85 jobs in the Central Valley, consisting of 84 in the Placer County city of Rocklin and one in Fresno.
The Gap job cuts are all described as permanent, according to the WARN notices.
These job cuts mark the second time within days that a high-profile retailer has revealed major staffing reductions in San Francisco.
In recent days, Nordstrom unveiled plans to chop 379 jobs at the company’s department store and a nearby Nordstrom Rack store, both located on Market Street.
Gap’s layoffs are focused in the retailer’s office sites rather than at retail stores, the filings indicate.
The company said the job cuts are occurring at the corporate headquarters of Gap, Athleta, Banana Republic and Old Navy, all in San Francisco, and at an office operation in Pleasanton, according to the WARN notices.
In addition, cutbacks are occurring at a company photo operation in San Francisco, a call center in Rocklin and a distribution center in Fresno.
“Affected employees will (1) be paid all wages and other benefits to which they are entitled through their date of termination, provided they do not resign from their employment with the company prior to that date; and (2) receive at least 60 days advance notice of termination,” Felecia Shaw, Gap’s senior vice president of employee relations, wrote in the WARN letter.
