Is man’s success God’s definition of success?
From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham
Q: I guess this is an age-old question, but how can people who have shady and selfish motives, and use questionable methods to obtain the praise and support of their peers, attain success? And, is man’s success God’s definition of success? – A.D.
A: The Bible tells us, “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful” (Joshua 1:8, NIV). This is quite a statement – and a glorious promise. But what does success mean?
Where do we get the notion that our idea of success and God’s are the same? Some write books; some are clever managers and promoters or talented artists. Others are independently wealthy, attaining fame and fortune. Our world is obsessed with success. People may sigh when they discover that God’s definition of success is faithfulness to His calling on one’s life. A good many people don’t realize that a true servant of God is someone who helps another succeed.
The world may disagree, but it’s what God says that matters. Regardless of our achievements, we are spiritual paupers without God. In our desire to achieve success and obtain it quickly, it’s easy to get our values mixed up. Success stories may be great motivational material for sales seminars, but this doesn’t necessarily mean that God blesses the motive or the outcome.
Sin can take its toll on the most noble achievements of man. Success or failure cannot be measured by any human standard. God measures peoples by the small dimensions of humility and not by the bigness of their achievements or the size of their capabilities. Many Christians who may not be succeeding according to the world’s standards now will reap great rewards in Heaven. Keep your eyes on Jesus.
