Q: A Hollywood actor announced on Bill Maher’s podcast that he was “Christian-adjacent.” I’ve never heard that term, but it drew attention to other high-profile people who state that they’re Hindu-Christians, Jewish Christians, Muslim-Christians, etc. Hyphenated religion sounds like a mixing of faiths that produces its own bibles and beliefs of all kinds. Is this acceptable to God, or is Satan behind this double-talk? – H.R.

A: Christ’s message belongs to the world, but all in the world do not belong to Christ. The Bible says, “Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: … to keep oneself unspotted from the world” (James 1:27, NKJV). Some professed Christian leaders are willing to give up some of the Bible’s teachings to harmonize Christianity with other religions. We must be careful when believing things that cannot be substantiated by God’s Word.

Satan’s ambition is domination of the world. Satan, whom Christ called “the prince of this world,” was forced to go into the “religion” business. God does not compete with any other – He is Almighty God. But Satan, the adversary, prowls around like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour (see 1 Peter 5:8).

The vast majority of the human race practices or professes some form of religion. Hundreds of philosophies and scores of religions have been invented to circumvent the Word of God. Religion can be anything. Someone can have religion but not know Christ. It’s having Christ that matters.

There are many bibles of different religions. These all begin with some flashes of true light, and end in utter darkness. Even the most casual observer soon discovers that the Bible is unique. It’s the only book that offers redemption to us and points the way out of our dilemma. It’s time to put less confidence in ourselves and complete trust and faith in God and His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.
