The COSMOS is telling you to take your multi-mineral/vitamin
"Every one of us is, in the cosmic perspective, precious," according to astronomer Carl Sagan. The COSMOS (COcoa Supplement Multivitamins Outcomes Study) shows that too.
The study, out of the Medical College of Georgia's Prevention Institute, looked at data on more than 16,000 people age 60 and older and found that a person's very precious ability to continue to be agile and active as they age was enhanced by taking a multi-mineral/vitamin daily for three years. Folks who did that had a greater ability to comfortably perform everyday activities such as dressing, bathing, walking, climbing stairs, jogging or hurrying, and completing household chores -- in short, to live every day comfortably by enhancing cognition, blood circulation and physical stamina.
I recommend that you take half the multi in the morning and half in the evening to maintain steady levels of nutrients. I also recommend supplementing the multi -- always with your doctor's OK -- with vitamins D2/3 and K2, bovine colostrum, creatine, gelatin, DHA and EPA and 10 other supplements and small molecules that have substantially more benefit than risk for most over age 50. See my blog at MichaelFRoizenMD.substack.com for the full list and dosages.
But -- and there's always a but -- taking a multi or supplements doesn't mean you can shortchange yourself on nutritious foods. It won't make up for a diet packed with highly processed foods, red and red processed meats and added sugars. You still need a steady supply of healthy proteins, grains, and produce. To help you get that, check out my "What to Eat When Cookbook."
