A Grand Finale! Another win by Tietz. He has just sacrificed his queen on b5!! He saw a spectacular mating attack. Here’s a big clue: the best defense by Black ends with the king being mated on f5!

Won by Tietz vs.Ramisch in Carlsbad, 1898: 1.Ba4+ Kc4 [1...Kxa4 2.Nc3+ Kb3 3.Nd2#] 2.b3+ Kd3 3.Bb5+ Ke4 4.Rg4+ Kf5 5.Ne3# I hope you noted the pure mate, highly unusual in practical chess, in the 1…Kxa4 variation. That’s when the king is in check and all the 8 squares he would like to escape to are protected by only one opposition man. The whole attack with the queen sacrifice was quite an extraordinary concept.
