WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — The College of William & Mary is under investigation by the United States Justice Department on the grounds the nation’s second-oldest university has violated its students’ civil rights.

Federal authorities alleged Monday that William & Mary has shown favoritism by way of scholarships and benefits to some students on the basis of race — an infringement of Title VI. The investigation will focus on possible racial discrimination within the university’s scholarships, financial aid, recruitment and support, according to a letter signed by Harmeet K. Dhillon, an assistant attorney general with the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division.

The Pentagon severed ties with William & Mary months ago, saying at the time the college promoted an “anti-American” agenda.
