Gunman John Hinckley thought he’d wind up with Jodie Foster even after shooting President Ronald Reagan and being arrested. He now realizes that wasn’t meant to be and wishes the Academy Award winner well.

The 71-year-old attempted assassin was institutionalized until 2016 at St. Elizabeths Hospital after shooting the 40th president outside a Washington, D.C. hotel in 1981. Hinckley, who now admits he was “delusional,” thought his actions might help his infatuation with actor Jodie Foster blossom into a relationship.

Podcaster Mark Joseph asked Hinckley in an interview posted Wednesday how he figured events would play out after he attempted to kill Reagan, shot two law enforcement officials, critically wounded White House Press Secretary James Brady and was found not guilty by reason of insanity.

“I thought she would, you know, after things settled down, join me wherever I was,” Hinckley said. “I wasn’t sure if I was going to be in jail or the hospital or what, but after things settled down, I had this notion she was going to join me wherever I was.”

Hinckley launched a music career after being granted unconditional release in 2022, but found some concert venues weren’t receptive to hosting his performances. He said his interest in Foster is no longer a priority.

“I don’t really see her movies, but I wish her well, and I know she’s doing quite well,” he said. “That’s all I can say, is just, I wish Jodie well, and I hope she has a good life.”
