Microsoft will help Stellantis integrate AI across carmaker's operations

Stellantis NV and Microsoft Corp. said Thursday they have inked a five-year deal to work together on artificial intelligence initiatives across several of the carmaker's divisions.
Joint teams will "co-develop more than 100 AI initiatives across sales, customer care and operations," the announcement said.
They will focus on tools to improve product development and validation, help predict maintenance needs, and deploy new digital features in vehicles faster, the announcement said.
In addition, the two companies will work on building a "cyber defense center" to protect the automaker's IT systems, cars and manufacturing sites. Microsoft will also help modernize and reduce the size of the automaker's cloud computing footprint.
And as part of the deal, Stellantis said it will equip its employees with new Microsoft AI tools "to enhance productivity and collaboration."
Ned Curic, Stellantis chief engineering and technology officer, said in a statement that the automaker has already been embedding AI into several areas of its business, including in engineering, manufacturing, design and customer interaction. Companies of all types are scrambling to figure out where and how to integrate more AI into their operations.
"Through our collaboration with Microsoft, we are accelerating our AI momentum across the enterprise, giving our teams the tools to innovate faster and deliver the products, services and experiences customers expect from us," he said.
It's the latest of several Stellantis deals with tech giants in recent years. Last fall, the automaker said it was working with Nvidia Corp., Uber Technologies Inc. and Foxconn on developing robotaxis. And Stellantis also had a deal with Amazon.com Inc. to work on in-car software with connected products and services, but that arrangement fizzled out last year, Reuters reported.
