Published in Business Articles

If you’ve had your car for more than three years, it’s time to test your brake fluid. Unfortunately, many car owners don’t think they need to check their brake fluid or completely forget to, so let this be your reminder to get it done!

If you’ve never checked your brake fluid before or need a refresher on how to get it done, you’re in the right place. Keep reading to learn where to go when checking your brake fluid.

How to Check My Brake Fluid

The first step to learning how to test your brake fluid is making sure your car is off and cooled. If you just got done driving it, let it cool down before getting in there. This will make sure you don’t accidentally burn yourself while working inside your car.

Then, pop the hood and look for the brake fluid reservoir. Once you find the reservoir, look for the minimum and maximum lines imprinted into it, and look at the fluid level. If the fluid is close to the minimum line or under it, you need to schedule a service to have it refilled or replaced.

If the fluid is at a good level between the min and max line, take note of the color. Brake fluid color should be transparent with a distinct yellow tinge. If it’s dark red or brown, it means it’s dirty and needs to be replaced.

How Often Should My Brake Fluid Be Changed?

If you get your car serviced by a mechanic regularly, they should take care of changing it at least once a year. Typically people will get it replaced every other time they get their oil changed to ensure it’s always running in its best condition.

If you drive your car more often than a regular person, consider getting your brake fluid and the rest of your car’s fluids changed with every oil change. This will help keep your car running properly for much longer.

Is Something Off? Hire a Professional

If you notice anything wrong with your brake fluid or anything else on your car, it’s time to hire a professional. Use a mobile car repair company that will come to you, so you don’t waste money on tow or ruin your car by driving it.

A couple of the easiest ways to ruin your car is by not keeping it in good repair or having someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing try to fix it.

Check Your Car Today

Now that you know where your brake fluid is, how to check it, and what it should look like, get your car checked out today! Remember your brake fluid should be changed with almost every oil change, and if it looks too bad, have a mechanic come to you.
