LEXINGTON, Ky. — The second day of racing at the 2026 Breeders’ Cup concluded Saturday afternoon at Keeneland with big winners in the Turf and Classic championship races.

The two-day event began Friday with five championship races. Nine races were on Saturday’s slate, including the headliner Grade 1, $7 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Here is a recap of what happened at the racetrack:

Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic

— 6:16 p.m. — 2025 Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty went out on top in the final race of his career, winning the Grade 1, $7 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Sovereignty, who is from Jonabell Farm in Lexington, earned his owners $3.6 million with the victory. The Puma earned his owners $1.2 million with a second-place finish, while third-place finisher Knightsbridge earned his owner $630,000.

It was Sovereignty’s first appearance in a Breeders’ Cup after an illness forced him to scratch from the Classic in 2025, the same year he was named Horse of the Year. He ends his career with $10.5 million in lifetime earnings and eight wins.

Sovereignty will retire to Jonabell Farm, where he will begin his breeding career.

Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf

— 5:36 p.m. — Trainer Aidan O’Brien picked up another Breeders’ Cup championship Saturday, as his horse Benvenuto Cellini of Ireland captured the Grade 1, $5 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf title.

It was any horse’s race as the competitors crossed in front of Keeneland’s jumbotron on the final straightaway. Ryan Moore, who jockeyed Benvenuto Cellini, found an opening in the middle of the pack and pulled the Irish horse ahead for a three-fourths length victory.

O’Brien extended his record of the most Breeders’ Cup Turf victories as a trainer to seven. It’s his 24th overall Breeders’ Cup win, which is also a championship record.

Benvenuto Cellini’s owners receive a hefty payday of $2.6 million with the win. Runner-up Map of Stars earned his owners $850,000 while Diamond Necklace came in third to earn $450,000 for her owners.

Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff

— 4:58 p.m. — Nitrogen finally captured her long elusive world championship win with a victory in the Grade 1, $2 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff.

Nitrogen raced in the 2024 John Deere Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies and the 2025 Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff, finishing third and second, respectively. She took the lead on the final straightaway of the 2026 Distaff and maintained it all the way through the finish line.

Nitrogen beat Fully Subscribed by two lengths. Finishing in third was Measure, who grabbed the final spot on the podium by just a neck.

The Distaff is considered the prime dirt race for female horses three years or older. Nitrogen’s owner, Leonard Green, wins just more than $1 million with the victory.

FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile

— 4:20 p.m. — Deterministic pulled off an upset in the Grade 1, $2 million FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile.

Deterministic took down Notable Speech, the prerace favorite and defending Breeders’ Cup Mile champion. Notable Speech could have been only the sixth horse to win consecutive Mile titles, but the horse from Great Britain made his finishing move too late and finished in second.

Deterministic held the lead coming off the final turn and led by multiple lengths for most of the final straightaway. Notable Speech charged hard for the lead but came three-fourths of a length short of the victory.

Deterministic’s owners collect just more than $1 million with the victory. Finishing in third was Lake Forest of Great Britain.

Cygames Breeders’ Cup Sprint

— 3:42 p.m. — Japanese horse T O Elvis made history with his victory in the Grade 1, $2 million Cygames Breeders’ Cup Sprint.

T O Elvis becomes the first Japanese horse to win the Sprint, a race that has seen only one other international winner. His owner, Tomoya Ozasa, wins just more than $1 million with the victory.

T O Elvis won in dramatic fashion, catching prerace favorite Englishman a few gallops before the finish line. Englishman opened up a wide lead with the finish line in sight, but T O Elvis closed hard in front of the energetic Keeneland crowd to get to the line first.

Liam Smith rounded out the podium by a neck over the next fastest horse.

Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf

— 3:04 p.m. — Kathynmarissa came out on top in the Grade 1, $2 million Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf.

The race, the premier contest for female grass horses, is primarily won by international horses. Kathynmarissa’s victory marks the first time a horse from the United States won the Filly & Mare Turf since 2018.

Kathynmarissa finished three-fourths of a length over second place finisher, South Africa’s Gimme a Nother. Ireland’s Jancis rounded out the podium by a neck over the next closest horse.

Several horses were in contention for the win coming down the final straight, but Kathynmarissa had an extra gear to pull away for the win. Prerace favorite Blue Bolt, from Great Britain, finished in 11th place.

Kathynmarissa’s owners, Michael Dubb and Michael Caruso, win just more than $1 million with the win.

Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile

— 2:26 p.m. — Prerace favorite Further Ado won the Grade 1, $1 million Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile in what was the closest contested race of the Breeders’ Cup so far.

Further Ado, the one-time Kentucky Derby participant, caught Owen Almighty on the final stretch to win by a nose at the finish. Further Ado’s owners, Tammy and Eric Gustavson of Spendthrift Farm in Lexington, win $520,000 with the victory.

Owen Almighty, from Flying Dutchman Farm in Lexington, finished two lengths of third place finisher, Full Serrano.

Prevagen Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint

— 1:48 p.m. — Bacio led wire-to-wire to win the Grade 1, $1 million Prevagen Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint by two lengths.

Bacio galloped to the lead right out of the gate and held it through the finish line despite a hard-charging pack of several horses. Bacio’s owners win $520,000 with the victory.

Finishing in second was Cy Fair, followed closely by 2024 Turf Sprint champion Starlust in third. Cy Fair edged Starlust by a neck, while Starlust finished just a nose over the next closest racer.

Time to Dazzle and prerace favorite Comanche Brave finished in a dead heat for fourth.

Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint

— 1:10 p.m. — Prerace favorite Ways And Means won the first race of championship Saturday at the Breeders’ Cup, winning the Grade 1, $1 million Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint.

The race featured the fastest female horses three years and older from across the world, and Ways and Means won by 6 1/4 lengths. The 5-year-old horse from Klaravich Stables was third in the 2024 edition of the same race.

Seth Klarman, the horse’s owner, collects $520,000 with the victory.

Finishing in second by half of a length was Foie Gras, followed by Explora in third. Explora is trained by Bob Baffert and from Mesingw Farm in Woodford County.
