PITTSBURGH — The Steelers plan to have cornerback Joey Porter Jr. do more this week in practice, but 18 days after being removed from the physically unable to perform list, he has yet to be listed as a full participant in practice.

Porter was a limited participant in practice on Wednesday as the Steelers prepared for their Week 2 game in New England on Sunday.

Porter also was limited all three days the Steelers practiced last week when he was trying to negotiate a new contract with the team. The talks ended without a resolution and Porter did not play in their Week 1 win against the Atlanta Falcons.

McCarthy indicated Monday that Porter would have to go through a full practice before he plays, so his participation as the week goes on will be noteworthy.

There was one notable change made to Porter’s status on the injury report. The explanation for his absence last week was the back injury that landed him on PUP on the first day of training camp in late July.

The official reason listed Wednesday was non-injury related/conditioning.

McCarthy has said on multiple occasions over the past week that Porter needs more time to “ramp up” before the coach feels comfortable playing him. Porter did not speak after Wednesday’s practice.

Three other Steelers were on the first injury report for this week.

Left tackle Troy Fautanu, who missed one play during the fourth quarter of the Falcons game after injuring his ankle, did not practice. He played 66 of the offense’s 67 snaps in the 20-13 win. Max Iheanachor came on in his place, lining up at right tackle while Dylan Cook moved to left tackle for one play.

Receiver Michael Pittman Jr. was limited with a foot injury. Pittman was not listed on last week’s injury report, but he did miss three weeks of training camp with an undisclosed injury.

Tight end Darnell Washington also did not practice due to personal reasons.
