Environmental Nutrition: Cranberry juice benefits

Jessica Bunch, BS, Environmental Nutrition on

Q: How does cranberry juice support health?

A: Cranberry juice isn’t just a tart refresher. It offers real benefits, especially when you choose 100% pure juice with no added sugar.

Most well-known for its role in urinary tract health, cranberry juice contains proanthocyanidins (PACs) — plant compounds that help prevent bacteria like E. coli from adhering to the urinary tract. While it won’t treat an active infection, it may help prevent recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs), particularly in women.

Cranberry juice is rich in antioxidants and flavonoids, which help combat inflammation and support the immune system. Some studies also suggest benefits for oral health and digestive balance.

For general health, 4 to 8 ounces (120-240 mL) per day is enough. For UTI prevention, up to 10 oz (300 mL) may be beneficial but watch out for natural sugar content and high acidity.

Lastly, always choose 100% unsweetened cranberry juice, not cranberry “cocktail.”
