Going on a vacation can be expensive and stressful, especially if you plan on bringing your dog with you. With plenty of dog-friendly activities in your area, there’s no need to stray far away from home to enjoy a vacation. The American Kennel Club suggests the following tips to help you enjoy a fun “staycation” for you and your dog.
Picnic in the park. Plan a picnic with your pet! Research various parks in proximity to your home and pack lunch for yourself and your four-legged friend (dog food of course!). Don’t forget hydration, a leash and plenty of toys for your dog to play with in the park. It’s always a good idea to call the park first and double-check what their pet policy is.
Beach day. Head to a dog-friendly beach in your area and spend a summer day with your pooch. For dogs that are sensitive to the sun, be sure to bring dog-approved sunblock. Remember to bring an umbrella to set up a shady spot, a doggie lifejacket, and extra towels for drying off and riding home. Keep your dog away from drinking ocean water and always be on the lookout for signs on heatstroke in your pup.
Have a BBQ. Host a backyard barbecue with all your friends and their dogs! If it’s hot outside, its always good to set up a kiddie pool or sprinkler for the dogs to play in. It’s also fun to plan canine events, like trick shows or agility courses. It’s important for the dogs to have drinking water easily accessible and a shaded area where they can cool off. Remember to never feed your dog from the grill.
Take a hike. A hike is a good way to get out of the house and get some exercise with your pup. Whether its forest or a park near your home, a hike is always a fun activity. If you live in a city, urban trails can be just as fun. Be sure to double check with your dog’s veterinarian before hiking to ensure they are in good health. Don’t forget water, a collapsible dog dish and snacks for along the way.©2022 American Kennel Club. Visit at akc.org. Distributed by Tribune Content Agency, LLC
