My Answer
From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham
Q: How can I conquer discouragement? My doctor wants to put me on prescription medication for my depression, but I don’t really have a good reason to do this. I have a good family, a successful career, and am in good health, except I am always down. Maybe joining a church would help me. – D.D.
A: Discouragement is a large cloud that, like all clouds, obscures the warmth and joy of the sun. In the case of spiritual discouragement, the Son of God, the Lord Jesus, is eclipsed in our lives. Discouragement blinds our eyes to the mercy of God and makes us perceive only the unfavorable circumstances.
There is only one way to dispel discouragement, and it is not in our own strength or ingenuity. The Bible says, “Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord” (Psalm 27:14, KJV).
While there can be medical conditions for depressed thoughts, many people fail to humble themselves before God, who cares for our souls. People who seek the Lord and spend time in prayer and the study of His Word find strength, wisdom, and direction.
Many people fret about things they have no control over. But we must remember that God is the one who is in control, and when we humble ourselves, when we submit our wills, our thoughts, and our very lives to Him, He meets us in our time of need. “Be of good cheer,” Jesus tells us. “I have overcome the world” (John 16:33, NKJV).
How vital it is to belong to Jesus Christ. We must ask Him to bring us close to Him and praise Him in all things as we put our complete trust in Him.
