How does a young Christian couple build a happy home?
From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham
Q: Our church is hosting a special gathering for parents-to-be who never thought they would have a child of their own. They do not want gifts but have asked each person to bring a word of advice about raising children and building a happy home. I have never received such a request, and I want to put some careful thought into the gift of words from the heart. How does a young Christian couple build a happy home? – L.H.
A: An essential for a happy Christian home is that love must be practiced. Homes that are built on attraction and lust are destined to crumble and fall. Love is the cohesive force that holds the family together. It embodies loyalty, reverence, understanding, and something the world knows little about in modern times – self-less-ness.
Love imposes a tremendous responsibility on all members of a family, but it is a responsibility accompanied by glorious rewards. “Love,” says the Bible, “just as Christ … loved the church and gave Himself for [it]” (Ephesians 5:25, NKJV).
How did Christ love the church? He loved it despite all of its faults, its mistakes, and its weaknesses. True love does not fail, despite personality defects, physical blemishes, and mental quirks. Love is deep, abiding, and eternal. Nothing can bring a sense of security into the home as true love can.
Many children today grow up without discipline. As they become adults and take on responsibility, they don’t know how to cope with it. Just as God disciplines His own, parents must lovingly correct and guide their children.
Put into practice the wise words of Deuteronomy 11:18-19 and talk about them when you sit at home. Make your home the center of your social life with family, church, neighbors, and friends. God honors those who put Him first, and children will grow up to call you “blessed” (Proverbs 31:28, NKJV).
