From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham

Q: What does it mean to have a household of faith, and do people have to believe the same things to be a part of it? – H.F.

A: The church is the spiritual family of God. Most people think of a church as a building or a group of people. Some think in terms of varied denominations and many church buildings. But the church is far greater than this. The church is the family of God – that vast unseen fellowship of men and women throughout the ages who belong to Jesus Christ and are centered on Him, His life, His teaching, and living in obedience to Him so that He may be glorified.

The Apostle Paul wrote of “God’s household,” which is the church of the living God (see 1 Timothy 3:15). This is the reason we are never alone, for those who know Him as Lord and Savior. We share in God’s family – brothers and sisters in Christ. We are to love one another and help one another along this earthly journey called life.

The Bible tells us that we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepares us to do (see Ephesians 2:10). Before we even believed in Jesus as Lord, He was already working in us, convicting us of sin and drawing us to God. After we believe, committing ourselves to Him, He comes to live permanently within us. We’re told that if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ (see Romans 8:9).

The church is a storehouse of spiritual food whereby the inner man is fed, nourished, and developed into maturity – this is the purpose of the church, the household of faith.
