Can we do anything to stop the advancement of destroying ourselves?

Q: I fear for the future of our nation and the world. While we’ve made tremendous strides around the globe to educate people and bring civility to the present world, morality has slid seriously downward, and I fear not for myself as much as I do for the next generations. With the threat of nuclear war that hangs over our heads, where is this all headed, and can we do anything to stop the advancement of destroying ourselves? – W.F.

A: President Theodore Roosevelt said, “When you educate a man in mind and not in morals, you educate a menace to society.”

Many decades later, we see examples of this in our cities and neighborhoods. Every major civilization before us has disintegrated and collapsed from internal forces rather than military conquest. Why? The greatest danger is from within, for we’ve not yet solved the problems of hate, lust, greed and prejudice buried in the human heart. This is the story of mankind.

This causes people to ask where history is going; they are speculating on what the end will be. Christ’s prayer in Matthew 6, “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven” (KJV) – is going to be answered, and this is the prayer that we should all pray daily as the Lord taught His disciples.

The future kingdom is to be the kingdom of God, that there is a destiny for the human race far beyond anything we can dream. But it will be God’s kingdom and will come in God’s way. It will not be a world governed by people, but by God Himself – the Prince of Peace and King of Glory.

For true believers in Christ, the spirit of God’s kingdom is already here in the living presence of Christ in the hearts of His people. And the coming of the kingdom of God is closer than ever before. Will you be ready?
