Why do we need to study galaxies when we can't feed everyone?

on

From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham

Q: Why are humans fascinated with space exploration? It seems that God has given us everything we need to live life on Earth. Why do we need to study galaxies? It seems strange to spend trillions of dollars on going to planets with no people when we have millions of people we can’t feed because there’s a lack of money. – S.E.

A: People place great value on things and experiences that they wish to have or know; yet, many have no interest in knowing the God of the universe. Humans cannot see or touch the soul – but God can and does because He created it. The Bible says, “What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?” (Mark 8:36, NKJV).

When the Viking landed on Mars [1976], the world exclaimed, “Magnificent!” The mysterious Red Planet had been penetrated. An ingeniously designed robot, which was the result of $1 billion and the probing minds of hundreds of scientists, had accomplished a task that man had dreamed about for generations. Exploring the great mysteries of the universe, trying to predict the quirks of nature, and attempting to predict a trend in society or politics are mankind’s way of reaching beyond themselves.

In the business world, people search for ways to improve their efficiency. Business, world politics, and economics change so fast that in a few days, the direction of an entire country can change. Companies called “Think Factories” project thinking a decade or more in advance to keep abreast of the changing times. Much of the world is in desperate search of knowledge and fulfillment, yet God has revealed Himself, and much of the world ignores His revelation. When we explore the most important search of all, it will propel us in the only true direction, in only one way; it will lead us to God’s Son, who said, “You must be born again” (John 3:7, NKJV).
