Q: What does the Bible mean when it speaks of people being living stones? -- C.R.
A: A man once lost his job, a fortune, his wife and his home. But he tenaciously held to his faith in Christ -- the only thing he had left. Like Job in the Old Testament, he would not abandon God, no matter what happened. And yet, like Job, he couldn't help but wonder why.
One day he stopped to watch some men doing stonework on a huge church. One of them was chiseling a triangular piece of stone.
"What are you going to do with that?" asked the curious onlooker. The workman said, "See that little opening way up there near the spire? Well, I'm shaping this down here so it will fit in up there." Tears filled the man's eyes as he walked away, for it seemed that God had spoken through the workman to explain the ordeal through which he was passing: "I'm shaping you down there so you'll fit in up here."
Most people desire to "fit in." There are some places that no one should ever want to "fit in." But when it comes to fitting into the glory of Heaven it is only possible through repentance and accepting Christ as Savior. No one will enjoy eternity in Heaven without this transformation.
Make it your desire to be fashioned by the Lord Jesus Christ in this life so that you can be an effective witness for Him. Refrain from allowing Satan to discourage you to the point that you fail to see the eternal value of having undesirable things chipped away from your life. God hasn't promised that our way will always be smooth and free of problems, but He has promised to be with us -- and that should bring us great comfort.
