Happy is healthy
Mind and body are intertwined when it comes to health, longevity, and happiness. That, say Harvard researchers who are conducting the longest-running study on happiness, is why greater happiness is associated with healthier lifestyle habits, lower blood pressure, reduced stress and a stronger immune system.
The good news is that while research suggests genetics may determine up to 50% of your happiness level, you are in control of at least half of the happiness = healthiness equation. Here's how it all adds up:
Gratitude (that's being happy about and thankful for what you have) is life-extending, according to a review of more than 49,000 older women in the Nurses Health Study. Those who found much to be grateful for had a 9% reduced risk of dying over the next four years compared to those who expressed the least gratitude. In fact, gratitude has been shown to increase your sleep quality and sense of social well-being, improve cardiovascular health and reduce your risk of depression. List what you are grateful for daily -- you'll be grateful you did!
Having a sense of purpose also creates happiness. Pursuing a hobby, volunteering or helping family and neighbors, rewards you with better health, sharper brain power, more happiness, lower risk of depression, and more life satisfaction.
Stand tall. Posture impacts physical health and happiness. Research shows your emotional state and decision-making improve when your posture is good. Small changes have big rewards!
