"I've been on a diet for two weeks and all I've lost is two weeks." -- American comedian Totie Fields (1930-1978)

Medical History

This week in 1987, a patent for "keeping a head alive" was issued to Chet Fleming. The idea consisted of a cabinet providing physical and biochemical support for an animal's head severed from its body. Oxygenated blood and nutrients would be circulated by tubes connected to arteries and veins emerging from the neck, with carbon dioxide and waste products removed by machines as well. Fleming claimed to have thoroughly tested his invention on research animals and suggested it might also be used on humans suffering from various terminal illnesses, but as far as anyone can tell, there are no disembodied heads currently being kept alive.

"Leave for her a red young rose,

Go your way, and save your pity;

She is happy, for she knows

That her dust is very pretty." -- Headstone of American poet, critic and satirist Dorothy Parker (1893-1967). The lines are the final stanza of Parker's 1925 poem, "Epitaph for a Darling Lady."
