White to Play and Mate in Five

Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

This composition by H.A. Rusell is just plain old fun. Once you realize why your first move is so important, considering Black's predicament, the first few moves will come naturally to you. A delightful and challenging puzzler.

Solution:

1.Nc5 bxc5 2.Rd4 cxd4 3.Bg7 dxe3 4.Bh6 e2 5.Bd2# If you tried 1.c5 bxc5 2.Nec3 c4 3.Re5 cxd3 4.Rxa4#, you were a bit optimistic. If Black does not cooperate, it is a mate in 6: 1...Kxb5 2.Nc7+ Kc6 3.Rf5 bxc5 4.Re2 c4 5.Na8 cxd3 6.Rc5#
