White to Play

Published in Chess Puzzles

This is a wonderful position for an IQP lesson. There is more than one way to win, even in the variations. The themes we have already seen are in there with some you haven’t. There is the N on e5, the weaknesses on f7 and e6 and the Q and B teamwork. Have fun looking at the possibilities!

The position is from Hanauer-Barta, 1929 but in the game White opted for 1.Nxf7 which also works. 1.Bxh7+ 1.Nxf7 Kxf7 2.Ne5+ (2.Ng5+! Kg7 3.Qh5 Rh8 4.Nxe6+) 2...fxe5 3.Qh5+ Kg7 4.Qxh7+ Kf8 5.Qh6+ Kg8 6.Bh7+ Kh8 7.Bf5+ Kg8 8.Bxe6# 1...Kxh7 1...Kg7 2.Nxf7 Kxf7 3.Nh4 Bb4 4.d5 Bxd5 5.Qh5+ Ke7 6.Nf5+ exf5 7.Rxd5 2.Ng5+ Kg7 3.Qh5 fxe5 4.Qxf7+ Kh6 5.Nxe6 Bf8 6.Nxd8 Raxd8 7.Rd3 and the rook lift will bring mate.
