In 1909, Michell has just played h5 against Yates. If you were Yates, what would you have done in this position?


Yates won by taking advantage of black’s pawn position. 1.h4 A good lesson for students is to figure out why every other white move loses.1.g3 Ke6 2.h4 gxh4 3.gxh4 Kxe5; or 1.Kd4 h4 2.Ke3 Ke6 3.Kd4 g4 4.b4 f4 5.Ke4 f3 6.gxf3 g3 1...gxh4 1...Ke6 2.hxg5 Kxe5 3.Kf3 f4 4.g3 fxg3 5.Kxg3 Kf5 6.Kh4; 1...f4+ 2.Ke4 g4 3.Kxf4 2.Kf4 Ke6 3.b4 and Black Resigned. He will run out of pawn moves.
