One of the classics of chess was the publication of The Art of Sacrifice in Chess by Rudolf Spielmann. Recently, grandmaster Karsten Muller revised it to make it a 21st century effort and did a great job. He added modern examples and commented on some of the original text. It’s a great textbook to learn attacking play from. Here’s one of the modern examples: Lagunes-Weill, 1979.


1.Rh4 [Yes, Black can give up a piece and lose "unartistically" by giving up a knight, but the actual finish is much more pleasing.] 1...Rfe8 2.Bxh6 Nxh6 3.Qxh6+ gxh6 4.Rxh6+ Kg7 5.Rh7+ Kf8 6.g7#
