The U.S. and Mexico have jointly deployed military personnel in a border area in Texas as part of “mirror operations,” the Mexican government said Saturday.

The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Navy, in a statement released in response to the deployment of about 500 U.S. soldiers in the Rio Grande Valley area, said Mexico has deployed 159 naval personnel, 11 vehicles and two drones on the Mexican side.

Security concerns have been central to Mexico’s relationship with the U.S., as the Trump administration calls for more aggressive action against cartels while Mexico seeks to keep trade talks with the U.S. on track.

U.S. Northern Command said Friday its operations in the Rio Grande Valley sought to “strengthen border security operations, increase the joint force’s ability to respond to threats and support federal law enforcement partners” operating in the area.

“The relationship between the two countries is guided by the four pillars of the Government of Mexico’s binational policy: respect for sovereignty, shared responsibility, mutual trust, and cooperation without subordination,” according to the Mexican statement.
