LANSING, Mich. — Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced Monday that she's participating in a trade mission to South Korea, her fourth official trip overseas of 2026.

Whitmer, a Democrat in her final year as governor, and other members of the Michigan delegation plan to meet with business, government and industry leaders to attract investment, according to a press release from her office.

"Michigan is open for business, and we’re going anywhere and working with anyone to bring more jobs, investment and opportunity back home," Whitmer said. "South Korea is a global leader in industries that are critical to Michigan’s future, from semiconductors and robotics to mobility and shipbuilding."

Among those traveling with Whitmer will be Quentin Messer Jr., CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Corp.; Marc Corriveau, senior vice president and chief government relations officer for the Henry Ford Health System; David Coulter, executive for Oakland County; and Charles Marshall, president of ITC Michigan, the electricity transmission company.

This investment mission is being funded by the MEDC and the nonprofit Michigan Economic Development Foundation, an organization that raises money from some of the state's largest companies to support Whitmer's travel and other business attraction activities.

The governor's press release didn't specify how long the new trade mission will last.

In June, Whitmer visited France, Luxembourg and Belgium as part of a trade mission.

Whitmer traveled to Europe in February, making stops in Italy and Germany. In January, Whitmer traveled to Switzerland, where she participated in the World Economic Forum.

"Michigan cannot compete globally from the sidelines," Messer said in a statement Monday. “Being in-market gives Team Michigan the opportunity to take our case directly to decision-makers, better understand where companies are headed as they consider the North American market and ensure Michigan businesses are connected around the world."
