FORT WORTH, Texas — The Collin County district judge who presided over Karmelo Anthony’s murder trial in June has been removed from a hearing Thursday that is set to determine if the 19-year-old should receive a new trial.

San Antonio Judge Sid Harle ruled to recuse Judge John Roach around 10 a.m. Wednesday, according to KXAS-TV reporting. Harle said he thought Roach could rule fairly, but outsiders would be concerned about his impartiality.

Anthony was sentenced in June 2026 to 35 years in prison for fatally stabbing 17-year-old Austin Metcalf at a Frisco track meet in April 2025. Anthony’s defense lawyers had filed an appeal for a new trial and requested Roach’s removal from all post-trial proceedings.

It’s not clear which judge will preside over Thursday’s hearing, according to KXAS.
