A wildfire is burning near the Holey Land Wildlife Management Area in far southwestern Palm Beach County with 50% containment as of Monday evening, according to the Florida Forest Service.

The H1 wildfire has burned a total of 4,000 acres, or just over 6 square miles, as of 6 p.m. Monday, according to the forest service’s map.

Another active wildfire burning in western Miami-Dade County, the Radio Tower fire, was 95% contained as of Monday night and has burned a total of 700 acres, or about 1 square mile, the map shows.

Through the remainder of August, South Florida is expected to see an above normal significant wildland fire potential, according to an outlook released Aug. 1 by the National Interagency Fire Center.

Much of Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties remain in severe and extreme drought conditions, the National Weather Service Miami said in its latest advisory issued Thursday. Total rainfall amounts recorded from May 1 through Aug. 12 show that Broward County has seen its sixth driest rainy season so far, the latest NWS Miami report said.

Within the last week, record high temperatures have been set in both Broward and Miami-Dade counties. On Sunday, a record high minimum temperature of 84 degrees was set in Fort Lauderdale, breaking the record of 83 degrees from 2005. In Miami on Friday, a record high of 96 degrees was sets, breaking the 1909 record of 95 degrees, according to NWS Miami reports.

The region will continue to see hot and dry conditions this week, according to a NWS Miami area forecast issued Monday evening. Light westerly winds and low relative humidity values, combined with the ongoing drought conditions, could result in an elevated fire risk, the forecast said.
