President Donald Trump said Wednesday night he doesn’t know specifics on Sen. Mitch McConnell’s health condition after more than three weeks of hospitalization.

Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that he hasn’t spoken with McConnell since he was admitted to the hospital last month, according to a post on X from Kristen Holmes, a senior White House correspondent for CNN.

“I have no idea how he’s doing,” Trump said.

McConnell, 84, was hospitalized June 14, but his team did not give details about his condition at the time, only saying he was receiving “excellent care.” On July 2, his office confirmed that he was still recovering in the hospital after it was unclear if he had been released.

McConnell, who is not seeking reelection this year, is in his seventh term and has held his Senate seat since 1985. From 2007 to 2025, he served as the leader of the Senate GOP.

The public has received few details surrounding his health condition, and only a handful of people, including former McConnell adviser Scott Jennings, Majority Leader John Thune and Senate Whip John Barrasso, have said they’ve spoken with McConnell this week.

Trump and McConnell, meanwhile, have had a strained relationship. While McConnell endorsed Trump in the 2024 presidential election, he has clashed with Trump over some policies in his second term, including the use of tariffs.

But the break in their relationship stems back years. In 2021, McConnell blamed Trump for inciting the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol. McConnell said at the time the mob of Trump supporters was “fed lies” and participants “were provoked by the president and other powerful people. “

Trump isn’t the only political figure unaware of McConnell’s condition.

In an interview with News Nation Thursday morning, Rep. Marlin Stutzman, an Indiana Republican, said he doesn’t know if McConnell is still alive.

“As a Republican, I think we need to hold our own party accountable, so the fact that we haven’t heard anything really from Sen. McConnell is very discouraging and concerning,” Stutzman said. “The things that I’ve heard and seen from some friends are that he’s obviously not doing well, but I don’t know if he’s alive or has passed away.”

Sen. Mike Lee, a Utah Republican, said in a social media post this week that details aren’t being shared with fellow lawmakers.

Democrats are calling for more transparency on McConnell’s health condition, including Gov. Andy Beshear, who sent a letter Wednesday morning to McConnell asking him to share more information on his hospitalization.
