All-ages curfew in place for Friday night at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront: 'It's one and done'

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The all-ages 9:30 p.m. curfew will be in effect in the Oceanfront resort area Friday night despite a council member’s desire to cancel it and pending lawsuits against Virginia Beach.
Mayor Bobby Dyer said the imminent threat curfew remains “status quo,” following a closed meeting among council members Tuesday night. A city spokesperson also confirmed there is no change to Friday’s curfew.
“It’s one and done,” said Dyer. “And then we’ll put our heads together and come up with solutions for next year.”
Councilman Worth Remick, who represents half of the resort area, said Monday that he wanted to eliminate the final night of the curfew, which was approved by the council after two high-profile shootings this spring. Remick and other city officials have been fielding complaints from business owners and residents about how the curfew is affecting them.
Police enforced the first two days of the curfew last weekend, and there were no reports of gunfire.
Violence has erupted at the Oceanfront during warm spring nights in recent years, but it tends to subside once the summer season gets underway and more events are planned, according to Police Chief Paul Neudigate.
Meanwhile, five Oceanfront businesses joined together on Monday to seek a temporary restraining order in Virginia Beach Circuit Court to block the enforcement of the curfew. Also, an Oceanfront resident is suing the city to stop Friday’s curfew. Both arguments will be heard separately on Thursday.
The curfew boundaries are from Pacific Avenue to the ocean and from Rudee Loop to 31st Street. A 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew for unaccompanied minors at the Oceanfront also remains in effect this weekend.
