Boston ICE veteran to lead nation's stepped-up deportation push under Trump

Todd Lyons, who headed up Boston’s ICE office, is now in charge of the president’s ramped-up deportation push, the Herald has learned.

Lyons headed the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Removal Operations — Boston ERO for short — during the previous administration and will now take on a top job in the Trump administration, according to HHS sources.

His role will be acting head of ICE ERO for the nation. It’s a big step up for the Hub official.

This all comes as President Donald Trump’s vow to deport illegal immigrant criminals is moving the needle, but not as fast as he’d like, as the Herald reports today.

Unofficial border crossings have fallen substantially since Trump returned to the White House, but the enforcement numbers his administration is sharing so far don’t add up to fulfilling Trump’s longstanding campaign promise to deport millions of people residing in the U.S. without lawful presence.

According to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, Trump’s efforts at rounding up immigrants facing serious criminal charges have resulted in about 11,000 arrests through his first 18 days in office, and DHS reported last week that they sent around 5,700 people back to their home countries during Trump’s first two weeks.

Lyons steps into the job with all of this on the table.

According to multiple reports, border czar Tom Homan has removed two top ICE officials in DC and is replacing them with Lyons.

Politico reports that a Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman said, in part, that ICE has a “culture of accountability” and “leadership will ensure the agency delivers.”

Trump’s job approval, according to Real Clear Politics, is tracking above 50% as he holds a mandate that helped get him elected to fix the immigration system.
