How to Play Texas Hold Em: A Beginner’s Guide

on

Published in Business Articles

The game of poker originated almost 1,000 years ago. This game spanned several continents and a number of cultures.

In the 1900s, a Texan created a spectacular version of this game that receives worldwide recognition. Rather than going against the house in traditional poker, Hold Em puts you in direct competition with the other players at your table.

If you want to learn how to play Texas Hold Em, read on!

Objective

In Texas Hold Em, you want to win all of the chips at the table. To create the best five-card hand possible, combine your cards with the cards laid out on the table.

You can choose whether to bet or fold on each turn. Your betting strategy may prove more important than the hand itself.

Important Terminology

Whether playing this game in person, or at the new online casino, you want to understand the terminology. Here are some key terms to know:

  • Ante: initial bet required to buy into the hand
  • Hole: cards dealt to you faced down.
  • Flop: first three cards dealt face up in the center of the table
  • Turn: the fourth card dealt in the following round
  • River: fifth, and last community card dealt
  • Big Blind: two seats left of the dealer must post ante blindly
  • Blind: one seat left of the dealer must post half the ante blindly
  • Call: post minimum bet
  • Raise: up the bet called
  • Fold: back out and lose your chips currently in the pot
  • All In: bet your entire stash

Understanding this will allow you to focus your brainpower on strategy.

Texas Hold Em Rules

With this set of poker rules, you do not hold your entire hand. First, everybody receives their hole cards face down.

Keep these private. Decide whether you want in on the hand or fold.

Next, the dealer delivers the flop, the turn, and the river, in three consecutive hands. You can call, raise, or fold at the beginning of each that you remain in the game for.

The last hands in the game show their cards after the winner. The highest hand takes the pot.

Then you get dealt another hole and repeat the process. This goes on until one player has all of the chips.

How to Play Texas Hold Em Strategically

Beginner’s luck will not carry you far. Develop solid game strategies to win.

Understand your placement at the table. This will help you decide how to bet.

The dealer holds the most power since they see everybody’s play before taking action. Therefore, they may play more aggressively.

Players in the blind position may want to bet safer unless they are holding an excellent hand. The blinds may also want to stay in at first, even when they might have initially folded since they must ante up.

Bluffing wins many hands in poker games. But it requires skill.

When holding a great hand, you may want to hold out on a call, just to make yourself look unsure. This may get somebody with a weak hand to raise the pot.

If you went in deep, hoping for one card to turn up and give you an excellent hand, you may want to bluff and go in big. This can cause players with better hands to fold.
