Q&A: Perennials for Shade

Question: I have a small garden that receives filtered light but no full sun. Can you recommend some perennials for this spot?

Answer: Here are a few perennials that thrive in partial shade. All are rated to USDA Zones 4 to 8. Most of these plants prefer a rich, moist but well-drained soil, so be sure to add lots of organic matter such as compost before planting. *The starred plants will tolerate deeper shade as well. Foxglove, coral bells, lobelia*, astilbe*, hosta*, goatsbeard, columbine, dicentra*, Japanese painted fern*, nepeta, monarda, pulmonaria.*
