Q&A: Preparing Perennials for Winter

Question: Do I need to mulch all of my perennials before the cold weather sets in?

Answer: As long as youOve chosen perennials hardy for your climate, you shouldnOt need to apply a protective mulch. The exception to this is plants youOve transplanted or divided in the fall; they havenOt had time to settle in and develop extensive root systems, so mulch will provide some protection. A wet heavy mulch, such as matted leaves or sawdust, may do more harm than good, often leading to crown rot. Instead, choose a light, fluffy mulch such as straw or pine boughs. And wait until AFTER the ground freezes to apply the mulch. If you apply it too early, the soil wonOt cool down enough to trigger the plant into dormancy. Snow is a wonderful natural insulator; most winter damage occurs when temperatures drop during snowless periods.
