Q&A: Planting Moss Between Pavers

Question: We are laying pavers in our back yard and want moss to grow between them. What type of moss will survive full sun, and can it be grown from seed?

Answer: True mosses grow under moist, shady conditions and would not be happy between pavers in a sunny area. Moss-like plants that will grow in the area you describe include Sagina subulata, commonly called Irish moss. It makes dense, compact, mosslike masses of slender leaves on slender stems. Purchase flats of plants for fast cover, or sow seeds in amended soil. Be sure to provide good drainage so the plants won't be stuck in a flooded area after a rainfall.
