Q&A: Squirrels Eating Bulbs

Question: How do I keep the squirrels from digging up and eating my newly planted bulbs ?

Answer: Squirrels consider tulip bulbs to be the equivalent of candy. There are several things you can try, but if there are a lot of squirrels where you live it may be better to plant daffodils instead. You can try: dipping the bulbs in a mole and rodent repellent just prior to planting; applying a repellent spray to the mulch over the planting area; watering the area repeatedly immediately after planting to settle the soil well; covering the area with wire mesh or old window screens to cage them out; or encase the bulbs in wire mesh cages before burying them.

I have found that those green plastic baskets berries come in at the grocery store work well. I put them over the bulbs when I plant and it seems to deter the squirrels from getting to them

squirels eating bulbs

Several years ago I read somewhere that medicated
baby powder would repel squirels. I use the least expensive brand that I can find, but I have also used Johnson & Johnson when I can't find anything else. After I place the tulip bulbs into the recommended size hole I generously sprinkle the medicated baby powder across the top of the bulbs. If I have some daffodils I will place one on in the center, sprinkle the medicated baby powder on that bulb and replace the dirt. [If I do not have any daffodil bulbs I just close the hole.] I place a light dusting of powder on top of the ground. Often I layer snipped pine tree boughs across the whole bed after planting.
So far, this method has worked for me and I have the most beautiful tulip/bulb garden in the neighborhood!
