Blues' third-period comeback enough for one point in 5-4 overtime loss to Devils

The Blues are not strangers to trailing by multiple goals in the third period.
And they're no strangers to coming back, either.
In a 5-4 overtime loss to the Devils on Thursday night, the Blues picked up one point with a late comeback but couldn't earn the second one as Jesper Bratt scored in overtime to lift New Jersey.
The Blues (7-7-2) erased a three-goal third-period deficit by scoring three goals in 3:08 to roar back from a 4-1 deficit. There were only 18 seconds between Philip Broberg's goal that cut the New Jersey lead to one and Dalibor Dvorsky's with 5:06 left that tied the game at 4.
Earlier in the period, Mason McTavish scored to begin the Blues' comeback. Robert Thomas scored in the second period on the power play. Jordan Binnington made 31 saves.
Anthony Mantha scored twice for the Devils, as Luke Hughes and Jesper Boqvist also tallied. The Blues faced Connor Hellebuyck for the first time since he was traded from Winnipeg, and Hellebuyck made 28 saves.
Bratt's goal 1:26 into overtime came immediately after Justin Barron's cross-ice pass was broken up, springing a New Jersey breakaway.
The Blues won Saturday in Detroit by coming back from two goals down in the third period to win, 5-4. St. Louis also beat Columbus earlier this season despite trailing by two goals.
The Blues finish their four-game road trip on Saturday afternoon in Nashville.
Still alive
The Blues entered the third period down 4-1 despite a second period in which they outshot the Devils 16-9 but were outscored 3-1. Both of Mantha's goals came in the second period, first on a give-and-go with Jack Hughes in the offensive zone and later on a breakaway behind the Blues' defense.
Boqvist himself scored on a bit of a broken play as a deflected puck found him at the side of the net, and he deked around Binnington for his fifth goal of the season.
Three of the five Devils goals on Thursday beat Binnington between his legs.
The Blues comeback began with McTavish at 11:46 of the third period, as he banged home a rebound of Justin Barron’s shot on goal at the net front. The goal snapped a five-game goal drought for McTavish, whose last goal came on Oct. 22 against Vegas.
Broberg pulled the Blues within one goal by speeding up the left wing in transition and avoiding a check from Dougie Hamilton to beat Hellebuyck.
Hellebuyck's own mistake cost the Devils the lead on the very next shift, as his attempted breakout pass up the boards was picked off by Connor McMichael and sped to the front of the net for Dvorsky to get a tip on it.
Last season, the Blues twice came back from down three goals to tie the game: Jan. 27 vs. Dallas and April 14 vs. Pittsburgh.
Berggren out
Forward Aleksanteri Kaskimaki reentered the Blues' lineup Thursday night, jumping up to the second line with McTavish and Connor McMichael. That left Jonatan Berggren as a healthy scratch for the first time this season.
Berggren was a frequent healthy scratch down the stretch last season for St. Louis but was a staple in the lineup through the first month of this year.
Kaskimaki was scratched Tuesday against the Rangers as Ross Johnston was activated from injured reserve.
Colton Parayko was also back on the Blues defense after missing two games with an upper-body injury. Theo Lindsten was a healthy scratch.
Making his mark
Blues forward Jake Neighbours had one assist and was on the ice for three St. Louis goals Thursday night. Neighbours also had a big hit on Devils captain Nico Hischier that prompted a fight with Timo Meier.
Neighbours also had a physical shift leading up to Thomas' power-play goal in the second period on a feed from McTavish.
