Penguins surrender goal in final second of regulation, lose shootout vs. Ducks

PITTSBURGH — The Penguins were one-tenth of a second from their 15th win of the season. Then one of the strangest plays of the hockey season sent them to overtime with the Ducks instead.

Erik Karlsson dove to keep a loose puck from crossing the goal line. He somehow pushed the puck past Arturs Silovs with his hand for a goal that tied the score at 3 with a single tick on the clock remaining.

Beckett Sennecke was credited with the goal, which was only unassisted because the NHL has yet to allow assists from opponents to count.

The game proceeded to a shootout. And Penguins fans knew immediately how that was going to go. They lost their fifth of the season — the fourth with Silovs in goal — and dropped to 14-7-7.

The Penguins dominated the puck. They dominated the shots — leading 48-28 in that department.

But the own goal with 0.1 remaining wiped away 59:59 of solid play and left the Penguins with yet another frustrating loser point.

The Penguins had broken a 2-2 tie that was hardly reflective of the action to that point with 3:55 remaining on a power-play goal from Anthony Mantha. They were on the power play again when disaster struck at the buzzer.

They were unable to convert with about 1:40 of the power play carrying over into overtime. Leo Carlsson scored the lone goal of the shootout, as he forced Silovs into a dive with a deke and lifted the puck over him.

It was over when …

With how overtimes and shootouts have gone for the Penguins this season, it was probably over as soon as the game carried past 60 minutes. But it was officially wrapped up when Ville Koivunen couldn’t score to keep the shootout going.

Stat of the game

The Penguins dropped to 1-6 in overtime games this season.

Around the boards

— Forwards Evgeni Malkin and Blake Lizotte were placed on injured reserve Tuesday. Both are week-to-week with upper-body injuries, the Penguins announced.

— The Penguins recalled forwards Sam Poulin and Danton Heinen from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Tuesday. They’re the AHL club’s top two scorers this season.

— Tristan Jarry had started the previous three games, the longest streak for any Penguins goalie this season. He went 2-0-1 with a .935 save percentage in the trio of road games.

— Rickard Rakell was practicing in a full-contact jersey during Tuesday morning’s skate for the first time since breaking his hand vs. Columbus on Oct. 25.

— Jack St. Ivany was also recalled from his conditioning stint with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. He remains on the injured non-roster list but is “day-to-day,” Muse said. He put up five points in five AHL games upon his return from a lower-body injury.

— In the teams’ only other meeting this season, the Ducks won 4-3 in Anaheim on Oct. 15 after scoring a power-play goal with fewer than 90 seconds remaining.

— The Penguins scored in the first period for the seventh straight game, the longest active streak in the NHL.

Up next

The Penguins play the second leg of their five-game homestand Thursday against Montreal. It will be their fifth consecutive game against a team with a winning record.
