SAN DIEGO — As anticipated, The Sentry at Torrey Pines will be part of the PGA Tour Championship Series in 2028, placing the tournament among the most prestigious events on the tour schedule.

Sentry Insurance, the PGA Tour and the Century Club of San Diego announced the news Wednesday morning in a joint statement. Few other details, like where the event will fall in the 2028 schedule, were provided beyond confirming the Sentry’s status as a top-tier event.

“Earning the distinction of becoming a PGA Tour Championship Series event in 2028 reinforces our standard of hosting a field of world-class golfers at renowned Torrey Pines Golf Course,” Marty Gorsich, CEO of the Century Club of San Diego, said in a statement. “With a new title sponsor in Sentry, we have a lot to look forward to and are delighted to be part of the PGA Tour’s most competitive tier while showcasing San Diego on an international stage.”

Last month, PGA Tour commissioner Brian Rolapp announced that the Championship Series will feature the tour’s top players competing head-to-head in approximately two dozen events. Those tournaments include The Players Championship, the four major championships, postseason and international team events (Presidents Cup, Ryder Cup) in a season running from February through August.

Championship Series events will be 72-hole tournaments with approximately 120-player fields, a 36-hole cut to top 65 players and ties and a minimum purse of $20 million. That’s more than double the $9.6 million paid out at the Farmers.

Sentry was announced last month as the tournament’s new sponsor, shifting its support to Torrey Pines after sponsoring since 2018 the tour’s season-opening event at The Plantation Course at Kapalua on Maui in Hawaii.

The Sentry in Hawaii was among nine “elevated” events, with a $20 million pursue.

“Torrey Pines is one of golf’s most iconic venues, and we’re excited to deepen our connection with San Diego and build on the incredible tradition of championship golf at Torrey Pines by welcoming the world’s best players to compete in the PGA Tour Championship Series,” Pete McPartland, chairman and CEO Sentry Insurance, said in the statement. “The Sentry is also about creating lasting benefits for the local community, celebrating everything that makes this region unique, and strengthening our commitment to making a difference in the communities we serve.”

It’s quite a turn of events for the Torrey Pines tournament, which six months ago had its future in doubt when Farmers Insurance bowed out after 17 years as title sponsor. The 2027 Sentry marks the 60th year that Torrey Pines will be hosting the PGA tour event. It will be staged Jan. 27-30 as a full-field event following a Wednesday-Saturday format to avoid going head-to-head with Sunday’s NFL playoff games.

Justin Rose is the defending champion in the Torrey Pines tournament after a seven-stroke victory in the 2026 Farmers Insurance Open. His four-day total of 265 was 23 under par, breaking the record of 22-under shared by Tiger Woods (1999) and George Burns (1987).
